Getting students to and through college.

College Access Program

College Access Program

The College Access Program (CAP) is the first step towards putting our students on a path to success. Through one-on-one advising, students learn to navigate and conquer the daunting application process.

Higher Edge advisors are trained on all aspects of the college landscape with a focus on matching our students to a school where they can and will be successful. Together, advisors and students work to:

  • Identify academic interests and potential
    careers
  • Visit college campuses
  • Create a comprehensive college list
  • Craft and polish essays
  • Complete solid college applications
  • Apply for financial aid
  • Search and apply for scholarships
  • Analyze financial aid awards and determine the most affordable option
  • Make an informed college decision

Success Program

Success Program

The Success Program supports Higher Edge students who completed the College Access Program and have enrolled in college. Students are advised and mentored on their campuses for up to six years.

The success program is a crucial element in supporting our students to achieve their goal of walking across the stage. This support focuses on academic, financial, and career guidance. Success Program students:

  • Build on the skills developed in the College Access Program (CAP)
  • Serve as role models to students in the CAP
  • Engage in individualized coaching, sensitive to their individual needs
  • Connect with on-campus resources
  • Ensure financial aid packages are consistent and secured
  • Receive transfer coaching, if needed
  • Gain access to leadership opportunities
  • Secure summer internship placement

We are incredibly saddened by the violence and senseless racism that has affected black communities for generations. Higher Edge’s mission is aimed at leveling the playing field, of supporting young people in our community who are our country’s future. We believe that Black History should be a requirement – not elective – in every school across the country. And that the time to enact policies to end systemic racism and racial inequalities is now.

We commit to working with community partners to advance racial equity in public education; to listening; to educating; to being anti-racist, and to taking action to do the hard work necessary for lasting, meaningful change.
